A food bank operated by a Graham-area church serves about 500 people a week, and the demand is expected to continue. Holy Disciples Catholic Church, located at 10425 187th St E., is part of the FISH Food Bank network in Pierce County. As part of its mission to serve the needs of the community, the church site has helped between 480 and 500 people each week. Forty percent of them are 18 and younger, according to a Holy Disciples spokeswoman. The need for donations grows as the weather gets colder, church officials said. The list of non-perishable food and other items that are welcomed include canned fruit, canned soup, chili, stew, ravioli, personal care items, large-size diapers 4-5, syrup and condiments. Donations of money also are accepted. The food bank is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with Wednesday's hours set from 2 to 6 p.m. The Holy Disciples spokeswoman said the food bank depends heavily on "the generous donations of many local businesses, and the help of over 50 adults and teens who volunteer an estimated 1,250 hours every month to stock shelves and serve customers." Holy Disciples emphasizes hospitality, community-building, outreach and stewardship in its dedication to the gospel, church officials said.
