By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch Easton Jackson Zimmerman's birth about an hour after midnight on New Year's Day was a little later than his parents hoped but soon enough for him to gain instant fame as the first baby born in Pierce County in 2014. The delivery at 1:13 a.m. last Wednesday at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup made proud parents of Heather and Stuart Zimmerman of Spanaway. It's the second year in a row for first-baby honors to go to Good Samaritan and a family from south Pierce County. Baby Easton was cause for celebration among the hospital staff. Nurses gave the parents a gift basket of baby supplies and posed for a photo with the family. Mom and dad were equally excited, but professed good-naturedly to a touch of disappointment that their first child hadn't helped them with the IRS. "We were hoping he'd be born on New Year's Eve to get the tax write-off," said Heather, who spent 28 hours in labor. Dr. Carrie Wong of MultiCare Women's Center in Puyallup delivered Easton, who weighed nine pounds. He's the second child for the Zimmermans, joining a 2-year-old brother. Easton arrived 33 minutes earlier than Pierce County's first-born of 2013 GÇô Sydney Lee Bates, born Jan. 1 at 1:46 a.m. at Good Samaritan to Kathy and Jason Bates of Graham. She was the couple's first child. The odds of being born on the first day of a year are 365 to 1. Thousands of babies are born annually in Pierce County.
