Kaelin muscles way to top

Justin Kaelin, one of Washington's top high school shot put competitors in 2014, is back on top again early in the 2015 season. Kaelin broke the school record for Eatonville High School with a winning mark of 59 feet 5.5 inches in an Evergreen League three-school meet iast Wednesday n Rochester. The effort also is the best this season throughout the state in all high school classifications, making him an early favorite to win a second consecutive state title in the shot put later this spring. At Rochester, Kaelin's effort was nearly three feet better than the 56 feet 6.5 inches that won the shot put title in last year's 1A state championships. He also led all competitors statewide during the regular season in 2014 with a season-best 58 feet. Eatonville beat Rochester and Tenino last week. Ron Roberts won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 for the Cruisers, and he joined Mason Call, Josehip Hotz and Thomas Ridgway to win the 4x400 relay in 3:43.12. Eatonville won the girls' meet, too, led partly by Vandenboom's victories in the 200 and the high jump. Other multiple winners for the Cruisers included Kaelin (he also took the discus at 132 feet 6 inches) and Hotz (200 and 400 in 24.24 and 54.70, respectively.
