Justin Kaelin of Eatonville High School was a little over five feet short of another shot put championship in the Oregon Relays track and field meet last week. Kaelin finished second at 54 feet 1 inch. The winner was Zach Short of Lebanon (Ore.) High at 59-4. Short had two other throws of 58 feet and a half-inch and 57 feet 5.5 inches, either of which would have been enough to win during the competition April 17 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene. Each competitor was given four attempts. Kaelin's second-best was 52-8.75. The Oregon Relays is one of the most prestigious invitational track meets for Northwest high school student-athletes. Kaelin won last year with an effort of 58-2, at the time the fifth-best in meet history. It was one of his highlights in the 2014 season that ended with him winning Washington's 1A state championship. Kaelin and his Eatonville teammates will be at Elma on April 30 for an Evergreen League meet.
