Kayaker found dead in lake

The body of a 63-year-old man who didn't return from kayaking on Alder Lake was recovered Thursday. According to the Pierce County Sheriff Department, searchers found the body at 9:45 a.m. in the water on the Thurston County side of the lake, shortly after discovering the man's kayak approximately 150 feet from the shoreline.-á The man's name and the cause of his death weren't immediately available. At 11 p.m. on Wednesday, the Sheriff Department received a report of a missing kayaker. The caller reported his 63-year-old father went kayaking on Alder Lake at 8 a.m. that morning and failed to return home at 5 p.m. as planned. The son found his father's truck at the Alder Lake Park boat launch, then called 9-1-1. The Sheriff Department's marine unit searched the lake from midnight until 6 a.m. in heavy fog with less than 30 feet of visibility.-áAn aerial search wasn't possible due to the foggy conditions, said department spokesman Ed Troyer. The marine unit's search resumed at 8 a.m. Thursday, leading to the discovery of the victim.
