Lacamas Creek Bridge new and improved

The new Lacamas Creek Bridge near Roy that cost nearly $1 million to build is open to traffic. The two-lane span that's part of 288th Street South, just east of 48th Avenue South, is a pre-cast concrete slab with paved shoulders. It replaces the previous bridge that was built in 1954 from creosote-treated timber beams and was crossed by vehicles approximately 1,675 times a day. The approaches to the new bridge also were rebuilt as part of the project that began in July. The bridge was opened Sept. 23. The construction cost was approximately $840,600. Of that, $672,480 came from Federal Highway Bridge Program Replacement Funds and the rest from Pierce County. The new bridge is "needed to accommodate modern vehicle loads and volumesGÇ¥ and to eliminate "the increasing maintenance needsGÇ¥ of the old bridge, said Kraig Shaner, the county's bridge engineering supervisor. The contractor for the project was Zemek Construction.
