Democrats in Pierce County joined their fellow party loyalists in giving their majority of support to presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in Washington's Democratic Party caucuses last Saturday. Caucus participants statewide cast more than 70 percent of their votes for Sanders. A similar ratio was reported in Pierce County, where caucus locations included Eatonville High School and Silver Creek Retirement Community in the Graham-South Hill area. The precinct-level caucuses were the start of a process in which Washington Democrats will help pick their party's nominee for president. Nationally, Hillary Clinton is leading Sanders in delegates for this summer's national nominating convention. Democratic Party leaders in Pierce County planned for and got a big turnout of voters last Saturday. Linda Isenson, chairwoman of the Pierce County Democrats, praised local party leaders for arranging caucus locations "from Eatonville to Key Center and in every other community" countywide. Anyone who is registered to vote and who publicly declared a preference for the Democratic Party on caucus day could participate in the proceedings in which caucusgoers cast votes for their favorite candidate and tried to woo others to their side. At Eatonville High, students were invited to attend the caucus held there and, if they were registered voters, to participate in it. Sanders' campaign claimed its victory in Washington is evidence he can win the nomination.
