A Pierce County Council committee will host a public meeting Feb. 9 in Parkland to gather citizens' input on changes to proposed shoreline development guidelines required by the state. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Pacific Lutheran University's Scandinavian Cultural Center and will address 18 amendments that resulted from a series of hearings last spring. The council's Community Development Committee proposed changes to aquaculture practices, shoreline buffer provisions, and development around Lake Tapps Reservoir. Now the committee wants feedback on those changes before sending a final version to the full council, said Councilman Rick Talbert, the committee's chairman. The council is expected to vote on the proposals March 10 and then send them to the state Department of Ecology for review. A meeting to the one in Parkland is scheduled for March 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the County-City Building (room 1045) in Tacoma. State law requires that Pierce County update its shoreline development regulations, which were adopted in the early 1970s. The rules affect approximately 12,000 pieces of property near marine waters, rivers and certain streams, lakes, wetlands and floodplains. Examples of development that will be reviewed for compliance with the updated shoreline regulations include residential development and associated accessory uses, docks, piers and floats, bulkheads and retaining walls, boat launching ramps, recreational development, marinas and aquaculture uses.-á-á-á More information is available at www.piercecountywa.org/shoreline.
