Military dads and babies 'meet' in 3D/4D

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch Sara Gamache likes helping the big military "familyGÇ¥ that she's part of. So this Sunday, the ultrasound clinic owned by the former Eatonville resident will give a free 3D/4D ultrasound to 10 pregnant women whose husbands are deployed in the military. And the expecting dads, no matter where they are, will watch the process as it's happening -¼GÇô on Fathers Day, no less - via computer or cell phone through a technology called Sonostream Live. The service, which includes audio, can be accessed from anywhere in the world, as long as an Internet connection is available. "Being a military wife myself, I wish this service was around when my husband was deployed during my pregnancies,GÇ¥ said Gamache, a mother of two and the owner of Mother Nurture Ultrasound in Puyallup. "I want to help make these fathers feel like they are part of the pregnancy, too, and what better day to do it than Fathers Day? Seeing their unborn baby move in 4D will provide a unique bonding experience for these dads.GÇ¥ The technology for looking inside the body to capture 3D and 4D pictures of the baby is similar to radar. A probe emits sound waves into the body, listens for the return echo and generates an image that's more detailed and realistic than standard 2D images. Families whose applications are accepted for the free ultrasounds on June 19 will also receive a teddy bear containing the a recording of their baby's heartbeat. The keepsakes, sponsored Lori Holman, a broker at Windermere Real Estate, will be mailed to the fathers. "In addition to running my business, I try to give back to the military community,GÇ¥ Gamache said. "I do monthly giveaways for military spouses, but this is by far the biggest one I've done. I want to do it each year.GÇ¥ Her husband, Caleb, is active-duty in Special Forces at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The couple have a daughter, Kaydence, and a son, Canaan. Gamache, an Eatonville native who graduated from Eatonville High School, studied business and marketing at Pacific Lutheran University. After marrying, she and Caleb moved to North Carolina, where he was stationed. While there, "I trained at an ultrasound facility for the 3D/4D ultrasound. When we got to come back home and be stationed at Lewis-McChord last April, I opened my business,GÇ¥ she said.
