Mountain road project back

Mountain road project back
Work on the Nisqually to Paradise road at Mount Rainier National Park has resumed, and returning with it are likely driving delays for park visitors. Crews began their latest work last week week, initially on roadside utility vaults, Delays at those locations and elsewhere into November should be expected by visitors but shouldn't last more than 30 minutes at a time, park officials said. In connection with the project, power outages are planned Oct. 13-23 at Longmire and Paradise. The $32 million, federal-funded Nisqually to Paradise rehabilitation project, which was first announced in December 2012, will be in two phases. Each one will take as much as two years to complete. The first phase began in February 2014 and includes paving and substructure work on Ricksecker Point Loop Road and Paradise Valley Road. Phase two is expected to begin in 2016 at Longmire and end at Paradise in 2017. About 17 miles of roadway are involved. Officials say that when the project is finished, visitors will have a better driving experience and the road will be in better shape to withstand weather and heavy traffic year-round to the popular Paradise recreation area and other parts of the park.
