New map for Elbe Hills hikes

Finding opportunities for hiking, picnics and camping in Elbe Hills State Forest is easier with the publication of a new map of the public recreation area by the state Department of Natural Resources. The new map, available in smartphone or printed versions, covers the nearly 50,000-acre landscape in the Nisqually River Valley near Mount Rainier. "This is one of our most popular winter recreation areas,GÇ¥ said Brock Milliern, DNR's statewide recreation manager. "With this map, snowshoers and cross-country skiers will have a better sense of the trails and options for winter recreation Summer has so much to offer, too, including some of the state's best ORV (off-road vehicle) trails.GÇ¥ The map is the sixth in a series of DNR state forest maps, which are popular with trail users, backcountry hikers and others who use public lands for outdoor recreation. The maps also are used by emergency-responders. The georeferenced map can be downloaded to smartphones by using the free Avenza PDF Maps Mobile app. Downloading instructions are available in DNR's blog. The map's printed version can be purchased for $9 online or in person, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., from the state Department of Printing at 7580 New Market St. SW. in Tumwater. A similar map for Tahoma State Forest is also available via DNR.
