Land-use zoning in the Nisqually River valley area could change as a result of a state-mandated review by Pierce County officials. County planners have scheduled a public meeting in Ashford Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. at the Mount Rainier Lions Club hall to discuss possible changes with landowners. According to the county's Department of Planning and Land Services, the state Growth Management Act (GMA) and related court decisions require counties statewide to determine if property in rural commercial zones meets GMA requirements that limit commercial activity in those areas. One requirement is that such land must have been used for commercial activity as of July 1, 1990. If it wasn't, its zoning will probably be changed to rural residential, which would allow farming and residential uses and exclude commercial uses. Current commercial uses would be allowed to continue even if the zoning changes, Planning and Land Services director Dennis Hanberg said in letters sent in October to affected landowners. The rural zoning issue is expected to go before the county Planning Commission in December as part of a process of updating the county's comprehensive land-use plan.
