Plans for the Nisqually River Water Trail will be the subject of an open house for the public July 18 in Eatonville. The session, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Eatonville branch of Pierce County Library System (205 Center St. W.), will be hosted by the Nisqually River Council and the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program. A short opening presentation will be followed by informational materials in an open-house format until 7:30. Water trails offer non-motorized recreationalists and paddlers the opportunity to travel a designated route along a navigable river by providing access areas, environmental and historical points of interest, and picnic stops. They emphasize the environment, history and culture of the area and promote resource stewardship, said Morgan Greene, the river council's program coordinator. The proposed Nisqually water trail would stretch from Nisqually State Park near Eatonville to Luhr Beach on Puget Sound. Recommendations for the trail include developing new river access points, creating maps, guides and interpretation materials, and highlighting the ways that hikers, photographers, bird watchers and other other recreationists can be near the river, according to Greene. A draft plan is available at nisquallyriver.org. the website for the Nisqually River Council. Additional information is available by Greene at morgan@nisquallyriver.org or 360-438-8715.
