The regular-season portion of the Evergreen League high school baseball campaign went into overtime last week before Elma outlasted Eatonville in the race for the final berth in the 1A district playoffs. Elma beat the Cruisers 9-5 Friday in a tie-breaker after the teams finished in a dead heat for the coveted spot. Elma led 5-0 after a four-run third inning, only to have Eatonville tie the score with five runs in the bottom of the third. But the Eagles went back ahead to stay with a run in the fourth inning, then added three more tallies in the fifth. Eatonville coach Mike Moeller credited his team's resiliency, noting that it "battled throughout" but simply "fell short." (Read more in the May 13 print edition of The Dispatch)
