Part of Orting-Kapowsin Highway will soon be off-limits to the use of compression brakes. In response to citizen concerns about noise from the brakes that are common on large trucks, the Pierce County Council approved an ordinance Dec. 15 calling for the partial ban on the brakes. The county will post signs notifying the public of the rule. Ordinances take effect 10 days after being signed into law by the county executive. Residents in area of the Horizon Ridge neighborhood complained about noise from compression brakes, according to county officials. Also called Jake brakes, the braking mechanisms can create a loud chattering sound. The county already had regulations that allow the use of compression brakes to be prohibited where posted.
