A five-mile section of State Route 7 between Alder and La Grande was scheduled to be closed Monday afternoon and remain off-limits to motorists most of the rest of this summer and into the fall for more efforts to stop a hillside from collapsing onto the roadway. State Department of Transportation (DOT) officials said a detour around the area will include State Route 161 and Alder Cutoff Road. Both the closure and detour will be in place through November as crews build a permanent debris containment wall at a site of a previous landslide in Alder Canyon. Approximately 1,600 vehicles use the affected portion of SR-7 daily, according to DOT officials, who advised that the detour could add up to 15 minutes to trips.
