A three-week paving project in the Paradise parking lots at Mount Rainier National Park is scheduled to start today, which park officials say is a necessary inconvenience for visitors. Parking at the popular recreation area will be limited near the Jackson Visitor Center and Paradise Inn, and visitors planning to park overnight should park either along the Paradise Valley Road or in the Paradise Picnic Area, officials advised. "While we realize that park visitors could be impacted by the paving project, September provides the contractor with a small window of timeGÇ¥ when the number of visitors "drops offGÇ¥ and weather conditions "are still suitable for paving,GÇ¥ said Randy King, the park's superintendent. The parking lot work is part of a larger, four-year project to repair and pave the heavily traveled park road between the Nisqually entrance and Paradise. The improvements are needed to keep the road and parking in good shape. The paving project will occur in phases: " During Sept. 6GÇô9, work will occur Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Half of the vehicle spaces in the upper parking lot near Paradise Inn and half of the lower parking lot will be unavailable. Flaggers will direct traffic to parking areas that are open. Any vehicles parked in the closed area will be ticketed and towed. " During Sept. 11GÇô16, work is scheduled for weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the other half of the upper and lower parking lots. Traffic again will be directed to available lots. " Paving is expected to be finished during Sept. 19GÇô23. Sections of the lots will be closed as paving progresses. The schedule is subject to weather and worksite conditions.
