Pierce unemployment near lowest for year

The percentage of out-of-work Pierce County residents is almost at its lowest so far this year. In its announcement of monthly unemployment rates among counties statewide, Washington's Employment Security Department reported last week that Pierce County's jobless rate in June was 6.4 percent. The slight decrease from 6.5 percent in May marked the second-lowest single-month percentage this year for Pierce. The lowest was 6.2 percent in April, and the highest was 7.8 percent in January. The rate has been 6.5 percent or lower since March. In Pierce's neighboring counites, the June unemployment was 8.2 percent in Lewis 8.2, 5.9 percent in Thurston, 4 percent in King, and 6.6 percent in Yakima 6.6. Statewide unemployment was at 5.3 percent.
