Prison sentence in traffic fatality

A Spanaway man is going to prison for driving his car into and killing another man last year. Jason Raynaldo Tamayo, 45, was sentenced April 17 in Pierce County Superior Court to eight years in prison for the death of Mark Nigh, 56. Tamayo pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide. On May 23, 2014, Nigh and his adult son were delivering glass to an apartment building near Commerce and South Seventh streets in downtown Tcoma. As Nigh was loading his tools into the back of his work truck, a vehicle driven by Tamayo slammed into him, pinning Nigh and severing his legs. He was transported to the hospital, but died two days later. Witnesses said Tamayo was speeding, ran a stop sign and swerved into oncoming lanes to pass two cars immediately prior to striking Nigh, according to authorities, who also said police determined that Tamayo was impaired by drugs. "This is another horrible illustration of why drugs and driving don't mix,GÇ¥ said Prosecuting Attorney Mark Lindquist. Nigh, who lived in University Place, "was well-known and well-liked in the community,GÇ¥ Lindquist added. Tamayo most recently lived in Spanaway. He originally is from California.
