Margaret Anderson, the Mount Rainier National Park ranger who was fatally shot in the line of duty, has posthumously been awarded the Washington State Medal of Honor, the state's highest law enforcement honor. The award was presented by Governor Jay Inslee and state Attorney General Fob Ferguson to Anderson's parents, Paul and Dorothy Kritsch, during a ceremony May 3 in Olympia. Park superintendent Randy King was the ceremony's speaker. Anderson, who lived in Eatonville, was shot to death by a gunman who was driving a car she tried to stop after it drove past a mandatory vehicle tire chain checkpoint in the park Jan. 1, 2012. The medal is awarded to law enforcement officers who have died while on duty or displayed exceptional meritorious service. Another honor in Anderson's memory was presented May 8 when she and other fallen law enforcement officers were memorialized during the Pierce County Law Enforcement Memorial's annual Service of Remembrance.
