The federal "fiscal cliff" tax bill passed in Congress has the support of U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert. Reichert, whose 8th District constituency includes the Graham and Eatonville areas, voted with the majority of other representatives Jan. 1 to approve then measure that that preserves Bush-era tax breaks for individuals earning less than $400,000 a year. It also extends other tax cuts, including the sales-tax deduction for Washington and other states that don't have an income tax. Still unresolved by the congressional action are pending federal budget cuts. The sales-tax deduction is for 2012 and 2013 federal tax returns. In its vote Jan. 1, Congress allowed a 2 percent cut in payroll taxes to end, which will result in a larger tax bite out of workers' paychecks. In a statement posted to his official web site, Reichert said the legislation is "not a perfect deal,GÇ¥ but it helps "set the groundwork for tax reform and deficit reduction.GÇ¥ He added, "Now that we have voted for the largest tax cut in American history, I look forward to working with my colleagues on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee to reform our broken tax codeGÇ¥ and work on reducing government spending.
