A contractor has been hired to help turn Eatonville Town Hall's basement into a new home for a Pierce County Sheriff Department unit that serves the southeast part of the county. The Town Council authorized a contract with CTK Construction for the remodeling project. When the work is finished, the 20-officer Mountain Detachment will relocate to its new location. The contract is for $82,375, which was CTK's winning bid. The only other bidder, Star Construction, was more than $40,000 higher at $123,450. The county has agreed to pay $40,000 of the remodeling cost. The town will cover the rest. In February, town and county officials finalized the Sheriff Department's five-year lease of the basement space for $30,000 a year ($2,500 a month). The Mountain Detachment currently occupies a rented building on Eatonville Cutoff Road near the intersection with State Route 161. That site is only about two miles from Town Hall, but the latter is more centralized for the area the detachment covers, according to department officials. Eighteen deputies and two sergeants serve an area of 700 square miles, from 224th Street East to Mount Rainier. Communities in the region include Graham, Elbe, Ashford, Roy, McKenna and Spanaway. Unincorporated areas near Eatonville and the city of Orting also are part of the service area. Eatonville and Orting have their own police departments. When the Sheriff Department starts taking over the basement, town personnel who have work stations there will move upstairs to the main level. A long-standing mutual-aid arrangement, in which deputies back up the town's officers and vice versa when necessary, will continue, officials said.
