The rainy season is coming, and Pierce County residents living beside county roads can help make them flood-resistant. Picking up yard waste on their property and making sure nearby storm drains are free of leaves will enable rainwater to drain properly and wash as little debris as possible into storm drains, according to the county's Public Works Department. "With wet fall weather returning and leaves falling, the potential for flooding along county roads increases,GÇ¥ said Brian Ziegler, Public Works director. "By taking a few minutes throughout the fall to check on nearby storm drains and clean out leaves, residents help reduce flooding on our roadways.GÇ¥ If it can be done safely, remove leaves from storm drains with a rake. A list of local facilities that accept yard waste and leaves, often free of charge, is available at piercecountywa.org/yardwaste. Public Works can be contacted at 253-798-6000 or piercecountywa.org/rfa if a storm drain is on a county roadway with high traffic volume or limited sight distance for vehicles can't be cleared or the roadway is flooding. Residents of Eatonville and other cities and towns should contact their municipality to report flooding or storm drain problems inside town limits.
