Shrimping, crabbing underway

HOOK AND FUR By Bob Brown Marine Area 7 South, which includes Iceberg Point and Salmon Bank shrimp fishing grounds, reopened for eight days of recreational shrimp fishing July 9-16. The daily limit will be 160 shrimp, similar to the current bag limits in Marine Areas 6 and 7 West. Shrimp heads may be removed while in the field prior to coming ashore. All but one marine area in Puget Sound opened to crab fishing as of July 1. The exception is Marine Area 7, where crab fishing opens July 15 in the area's southern portion (San Juan Islands/Bellingham) and Aug. 13 in the northern portion (Gulf of Georgia). Anglers should note beginning July 16, Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) opens for hatchery chinook retention. " When it comes to making money, our state wildlife department is no slouch. From now through September, the department is inviting current freshwater or saltwater fishing licenseholders to upgrade to a combination license for under $28. A resident annual combination license (includes a vehicle access pass) normally costs $55.35, so what the department is offering could be considered a good deal for anglers wanting to upgrade their fishing license, while also being a money-maker for the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
