Eatonville is again joining other communities in promoting its loveliest gardens.
The fourth annual Eatonville Garden Tour on July 21 will feature five gardens. Three are in the town and two just outside, which organizers said makes for a compact tour, allowing those with tickets more time in the gardens and less time driving.
A new feature is the town's Visitors Center on Mashell Avenue with 15 vendors selling or promoting garden-related items. Two demonstrations will be held GÇô one on creating and planting long lasting garden troughs at 11 a.m. at the Holly Hut, and one on culinary and medicinal herbs at 1 p.m. at the Visitors Center. Another demonstration on making cement leaves will be at 3 p.m. at the garden of Chris Bivin and Diane Mettler in Ohop Valley, one of the gardens on the tour.
The other garden outside Eatonville belongs to Tracey Copeland, a professional landscaper.
Melanie McGuire, another of the garden owners on the tour, says her garden reflects her tastes GÇô "Victorian, English and eclectic.GÇ¥
She adds it's also a a magical place for the grandchildren with its many perennials and attention to detail. The Boda garden near the airport is a lush retreat and also dog-friendly. They have taken the rocks left from building their home and simply made them flow into their landscaping.
The Sonny and Lindy Morrison garden is set on high with views of the Olympics. This might require a little more effort to enjoy, but the concept of gardens within the garden will make it worthwhile, tour organizers promised.
The garden tour was the idea of Judith East, former publisher of The Dispatch and a former board member of Mountain Community Co-op. All proceeds go to the co-op, a not-for-profit natural foods store that opened in 2005. The tour's 16 sponsors allow all ticket sales proceeds to go to the operation of the co-op.
There will be a drawing for five garden-related items. Guests can enter by filling out part of their ticket and returning it to the last garden visited or the Visitors Center.
ABOUT THE TOUR: Hours for the Eatonville Garden Tour on July 21 are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are available at Mountain Community Co-op on Carter Street. and the Holly Hut on Washington Avenue. The cost is $10 per person until the day of the tour, when tickets will be sold at a booth at the Eatonville Visitors Center for $12.
