Snowshoer found dead on mountain

A 37-year-old Puyallup man has been found dead on Mount Rainier after disappearing during a snowshoe trip. Searchers found him at about noon on Monday next to Edith Creek in the Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park. His identity will and cause of death will be announced by the Pierce County medical examiner. The snowshoer apparently became lost last Saturday during a storm that dropped 20 inches of snow in 48 hours. He intended to overnight at Camp Muir, but was forced to descend due to formidable winter storm conditions. A second party took him into their shelter at Panorama Point, but when that shelter was destroyed in the storm, they attempted to complete their descent to Paradise together. The Puyallup man became separated from group near Edith Creek, park officials said. (Read more in the Jan. 7 print edition of The Dispatch)
