Student-athletes from Eatonville, Bethel and Graham-Kapowsin high schools participated in Tacoma Athletic Commission's fall Athlete of the Year program Dec. 16. The luncheon and awards program at Tacoma Metro Parks' Star Center in Tacoma featured the nominees of each school in fall sports during the 2015 season. The commission (TAC), which promotes amateur athletics and sponsors scholarships, invited 33 high schools throughout Pierce County to nominate their student-athletes based on academic and athletic achievements, The nominees from Eatonville were Jacqueline Christoph for soccer, senior Jayla Thirtyacre for swimming, senior Jacob McCormick for football, Taylor Wood for volleyball and Emma Vuksich for girls cross country. Graham-Kapowsin's lone nominee was Elijah Lugo, an offensive lineman who was named by the Associated Press to the 4A All-State football team. Bethel nominated Katie Lynn Pyles in volleyball, Mary Beck in swimming, and Elijah McLeod in football. TAC will hold Athlete of the Year programs for winter sports March 16 and spring sports in June (date and location to be decided). Scholarships for the 2015-16 school year's top athletes will be awarded at the end of the year. The Athlete of the Year for fall awards were won by Willow Lopez-Silvers of Curtis (swimming), Jack Yearian of Bellarmine, Tatiana Smith of Lakes and Emma Sjoland of Sumner (cross country), Megan Jacobsen of Bellarmine, Elly McEarchrin of Curtis, Malia Fakatouifita of Franklin Pierce, and Heather Thompson of Sumner (volleyball), and Donnell Diego of Curtis, Davis Alexander of Gig Harbor, Josh Riley of Sumner and T.J. Hazen of Wilson (football), and Emily Wilson of Bellarmine, Kelsey Lund of Bonney Lake, Morgan Weaver of Curtis, Kately Evans of Fife, Taylor Hoffman of Mount Rainier Lutheran and Jordan Thompson of Sumner (soccer).
