Thai Mekong in Graham a relaxing oasis

LET'S EAT By Carolyn Augustine Relax, have a cup of tea, enjoy the orchids, get good service and have some good Thai food. Go to the Thai Mekong Restaurant in Graham, and have an excellent dining experience. On a rainy, blustery day, the peaceful atmosphere of this small establishment was a happy relief. The decor is bamboo with many live orchids in various stages of blooming, clean, light colored wood tables and chairs. Lighting is ceiling fans with bamboo leaf blades and big windows, showing the open fields behind the dining room. The server, Vicky, was happy to answer questions about the Thai menu, and pointed out the Chinese items which were also available. We were there for Thai food, which is still new to me, and ordered the Chicken Pad Thai with egg roll at $7.95 and Chicken Yellow Curry at $7.95. Entrees came with a large serving of rice and a small salad. We ordered a side of peanut sauce at $1.50, because we have an ongoing search for really good peanut sauce. Our order came quickly and the servings were enough for two. I loved the Pad Thai, which was rich and had lots of chicken in a good brown sauce with two kinds of noodles.-áThe yellow curry was a spicy stew with carrots, potatoes and big pieces of chicken in a thin sauce. Not my favorite, but I am still learning about Thai food. The egg roll was about four inches long, and had vegetables in a crispy fried wrap. We took the peanut sauce home. The container was about a half cup, but it turned out to be excellent and didn't last the day. It was added to salads and our own leftovers. Rich with a good peanut flavor, it was as thick as pancake syrup. Next time we will get more. This was a good place to try some new food and relax. -á Carolyn Augustine is a freelance restaurant writer.
