Theater fund-raising hits $5,000 mark

A community fund-raising drive is continuing in an effort to prevent the Roxy Theater in Eatonville from closing. Leaders of the effort reported last week that a little over $5,000 has been raised. The drive has a goal of $70,000 to help the theater's owners buy equipment to show digital movies. Without the upgrade, the Roxy will probably close as early as next year, according to its owners. "We have a lot of fund-raisers going on in hopes that there will be something out there for everyone,GÇ¥ said Karen Woodcock, an Eatonville businesswoman who is spearheading the drive. Opportunities for contributing include: " An online account at kickstarter.com for making donations. " T-shirts for sale for $20 at the Roxy and Eatonville businesses All About You Salon, Postnet and Rainier Connect. " A drawing for a Batman poster. Tickets for $1 are available at the theater, where the poster is on display. " Kettle corn sales at the Roxy, including specialty flavors. All proceeds will benefit the Save the Roxy campaign. " On Dec 1, a showing of "The Santa Clause,GÇ¥ a movie starring Tim Allen, is slated for 2:30 p.m Donations will be accepted at the door. Planned for the same day are tours of the projection room starting at 11:30 a.m."for anyone who would like to see a part of history,GÇ¥ Woodcock said. " Theater seat plaques are still being sold for $300. The plaques, bearing the name of their purchasers, will be mounted on the backs of seats. The Roxy's co-owners, Mike Wood and Dean Wadell, have said for several years that Hollywood's conversion to all-digital films could drive small, independent theaters like theirs out of business because of the cost of switching from reel projection systems.
