Town Council shuffle taking longer

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch The Eatonville Town Council is taking longer than originally planned to appoint its newest member, and the decision so far involves one of its most recent ex-members. To replace Andy Powell, who resigned at the end of last year because he was moving out of Eatonville, the council will appoint someone to serve until voters can make a more permanent choice in this fall's election. The election winner would serve the final year of the four-year term Powell won in 2013. The council set a deadline of Feb. 10 for prospective appointees to apply and Feb. 22 as the date an appointment might be made. There were two applicants -¼GÇô Brendan Pierce, a former council member who left office last December after not seeking re-election, and Brad McBeain. Instead of choosing one of them at its Feb. 22 meeting, the council extended the application period to March 11 and plans to make an appointment March 28. The council vacancy and the call for applications are being advertised by the town in The Dispatch and on the town's Facebook page. Replacing Powell is the latest shuffling of the seat he once held and of the council membership in general. The pending appointment will mark the fourth new member of the council since 2013. Gordon Bowman, who ran for mayor that year rather than another term on the council, was succeeded by Powell, the only candidate in 2013's election for the seat Bowman gave up. After filling it for two years, Powell stepped aside because he moved out of Eatonville. The same month that Powell resigned, Robert Thomas took over in the seat he won in last year's election, replacing Pierce.
