It's hard to imagine a better stage adaptation of a television legend than the ooky, spooky and hilariously kooky "The Addams Family" at the 5th Avenue Theatre.
The production that continues through Nov. 11 was a Broadway hit and made fans of the audience at the Seattle theater on its second night there Oct. 25. The bizarre characters creatd by cartoonist Charles Addams - Gomez (played by Tony Award nominee Douglas Sills), Morticia (Sara Gettelfinger), Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch - frankly never seemed this funny or well-defined on the TV show of the same name that still enjoys cult-like popularity.
The national tour's strong cast cavorts and cuts up in an original story of Wednesday's pending nuptials with a young man from a respectable, very non-Addams family that sheds its blandness while visiting the future inlaws. Gomez tries to soft-peddle his daughter's nearly secret plans to a disapproving Morticia while managing the dual emotions of his beloved wife's invincible will and his own soft heart for Wednesday, played brilliantly by Cortney Wolfson, who was part of the Broadway cast, as well .
Music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, and direction and set design by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch complete the transformation of the story into a totally satisfying hunk of entertainment. .
Shows are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with matinees and evening performances on the weekends. Tickets are available at www.6thavenue.org and 206-825-1900.
