Update: Alder-area fire covers 150 acres; no evacuations

A fire that has grown to 150 acres in a heavily forested area on the south side of Alder Lake is starting its third week. The blaze, started by a lightning strike Aug. 11, hasn't resulted in any injuries, burned structures or evacuation orders as of the morning of Aug. 24. A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night (Aug. 25) at 7 p.m. in the Mineral School gym building in Mineral to explain discuss the fire response and its status with citizens, said Sarah Rockey, a district engineer for the U.S. Forest Service. Landowners near the fire have been kept informed, and they can contact Rockey at the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District at 360-623-5525 if they have questions. Efforts to control the fire, which is burning in steep, rugged terrain, are being managed by the Forest Service and the state Department of Natural Resources. More reporting about the fire is in another story on dispatchnews.com and in the Aug. 26 print edition of The Dispatch, which will go to press Monday afternoon.
