Voters like supermajority for county taxes

Voters in Pierce County want a bigger majority of County Council members to sign off on any future tax increases. In the general election that ended Tuesday, voters overwhelmingly supported a proposed amendment of the county charter to require at least five council members GÇô a supermajority GÇô to authorize new county taxes. Currently, four of the seven council members are enough for such tax decisions. The change is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2013. About 67 percent of the votes tabulated by the end of Tuesday night endorsed the new rule. The charter amendment was proposed by the council and placed on this year's ballot instead of waiting for the county's citizen-based Charter Review Commission to act on the supermajority question next year or in 2014.
