Watch meteor shower at Paradise

Mount Rainier National Park will host a meteor viewing event this Saturday. The program will be held at Paradise for the Perseid meteor shower, which will peak during the second week of August. The event is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. in the lobby of Paradise Inn with a short presentation about the National Park Service's Natural Lightscapes program. At 8:45, there will be outdoor star and meteor gazing next to the Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center with Tacoma Astronomical Society volunteers and their telescopes. Volunteers will also assist visitors to make astronomy devices called star finders. If weather makes star gazing difficult, the participants will move inside the inn's lobby for star finder making and a question-and-answer session with the astronomers. Participants will be required to pay the usual park entry fee of $15 per private vehicle in order to drive to Paradise for the event. There event itself is free. Additional information is available from park ranger Curt Jacquot at (360) 569-6577. Tacoma Astronomy Society information is available at www.tas-online.org.
