'Waterfall' flows at 5th Avenue

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch The 5th Avenue Theater is known for helping launch new musicals, and the tradition is getting another leg with "Waterfall.GÇ¥ The Broadway-bound musical love story, which opened Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 25, features an international creative team and a cast of 20. The latter is headed by Laura Griffith, Thom Sesma and J. Elaine Marcos, who have previous Broadway credits, and Bie Sukrit, a Thai pop superstar. Seattle is the second locale where "WaterfallGÇ¥ is being developed. The first was the Pasadena (Calif.) Playhouse in June, and audiences there no doubt had the same rewarding experience as 5th Avenue crowds. Soaring music and attractive sets (a working waterfall is stunning) support the story set in Bangkok and Tokyo during the years of 1933-39. As a monarchy is falling in Thailand and Japan teeters on the brink of war, a male Thai student falls for an American woman who is a decade his elder and also the loveless wife of a diplomat. Forbidden love ensues. So does an entertaining evening. Tickets and show information are at 5thavenue.org and 206-625-1900.
