Winter ending slowly on mountain

Even though today is the first official day of spring, most of Mount Rainier National Park is still covered with deep winter snow, including 167 inches at Paradise. But it's slowly starting to emerge from its winter schedule of closures and limited access. For instance, Tuesday-Wednesday closures of the road above Longmire will end today, though the gate at Longmire will continue to close nightly through April 15. On March 31, the Paradise snowplay area will close and ranger-guided snowshoe walks will end for the season. And visitor centers and campgrounds will begin opening in May. Information on weather and road conditions at the park is available at 360-569-2211 and http://facebook.com/MountRainierNPS. (Read more in the March 27 print edition of The Dispatch)
