Six former Graham-Kapowsin High School student-athletes recently made their college commitments official. McKenzie Keane's is the biggest geographically.
Keane, who recently graduated from Graham-Kapowsin, is going halfway across the country after signing a national letter of intent with William Penn University. The small NAIA school (about 1,600 students) is located in Oskaloosa, Iowa, about 60 miles from the state's capitol of Iowa City and a few hours from Chicago, Ill.
Keane, a setter, is one of 12 freshmen on Penn's roster for the 2017 season, which will begin Aug. 18 when the Statesmen compete in a two-day tournament in Indiana.
Penn, which competes in the Midwest Collegiate Conference, finished its 2016 season with a 7-27 record under fifth-year coach Jennifer Carlson.
Other ex-Graham-Kapowsin student-athletes who recently signed letters of intent include:
• Hannah Barbour, who will play volleyball for Edmonds Community College.
• Beau Blowers, who is going east of the Cascade Mountains to play baseball for Yakima Valley Community College.
• Julia Heronema, a volleyball recruit for Pierce College.
• Mariah Senato, who will join Heronema on Pierce's volleyball team.
• Kiara Sanders, who is taking her fastpitch talents to Pierce College.
Pierce, Spokane Valley and Edmonds compete in the Northwest Athletic Conference, which has 36 member colleges in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia.
The letter-of-intent signings for the six former Eagles were held at Graham-Kapowsin. Family members were on hand for the occasion.
