Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Lindquist will speak in Eatonville next week on efforts to crack down on career criminals and abuse of elders.
Starting at 7:30 p.m. on May 9 at Eatonville High School's auditorium, Lindquist will explain "community initiatives" aimed at fighting:
• Elder abuse. A special unit devoted to the crime was formed by Lindquist's office in 2011 and prosecuted 250 cases in its first five years. A federal grant of $371,000 supports county programs for assisting elder-abuse victims.
• Chronic offenders. The High Priority Offender Program focuses resources on the small percentage of repeat offenders who commit a large percentage of overall crimes. The program, launched in 2016 , involves coordination with 24 law enforcement agencies in the county.
The Eatonville Lions Club is sponsoring Lindquist's speech.
In a similar appearance recently in Sumner, Lindquist said "emphasis on career criminals and high-impact offenders will make our community safer."
About elder abuse, he promised "vigorous prosecution" on behalf of "the most vulnerable community members."
