• A new flagpole at the hall of Mt. Rainier Eagles Aeire 3158 has been dedicated to Harry Everett Jr., an Eagles member who died in August.
The flagpole was formally dedicated Sept. 10 along with a plaque that calls Everett "a valued Eagle who now has wings. May you soar."
Everett, who lived in the Eatonville area, was known for his volunteering and generosity with the Eagles and other community activities. He "meant a great deal to me and many of you, as well," club member Jason Simmons wrote in the group's newsletter.
• When most people take a breath, they take it for granted. But for more than 70,000 Pierce County children and adults with asthma, breathing can be a struggle. For 12 years at Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, Judy Olsen been an advocate for making breathing easier for them.
In recognition of her work as an environmental health specialist, the Washington State Public Health Association (WSPHA) honored Olsen with its Public Health Excellence Award at its annual conference Oct. 17. The award annually goes to a public health professional whose commitment has had a positive effect on the public and co-workers.
“Judy consistently shows her dedication to make life better for people in our communities,” said Len Adams, the Health Department’s environmental health program manager. “Her compassionate professionalism comes through whether she’s working with co-workers or clients.”
