Barkis named to state committees

State Rep. Andrew Barkis, whose district includes south Pierce County, has been appointed to the Washington State Council on Aging and the Washington State Public Stadium Authority.

The Council on Aging (SCOA), comprised of representatives from local governments, the Legislature and other long-term services, makes recommendations to the governor about the special needs of Washington seniors.

Barkis noted that the state’s commitment to senior citizens was recognized in July by AARP, which named Washington one of the most successful states in the U.S. in supporting seniors, adults with disabilities, and their family caregivers.

“Our senior population is one of our most vulnerable” groups of residents, said Barkis, a Republican from the Second Legislative District. ”One of the key issues they face is finding and keeping affordable housing. I hope to bring my experience to the table and make a difference.”

In 1997, Washington voters approved Referendum 48, which created the Public Stadium Authority (PSA) and authorized public financing for a stadium and exhibition center. The $430 million complex, now known as CenturyLink Field, remains under the purview of the PSA.

The stadium, which is home to the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Sounders and is a frequent host of major concerts, “is a massive economic driver within our state,” said Barkis. “I look forward to working with the PSA to maintain this state-of-the-art facility for generations to come.”
