HOOK & FUR: Simpler fishing rules brewing

By Bob Brown

For years anglers have been calling for simplification of recreational fishing regulations, and that might finally become a reality.

Since the summer of 2016, state fishery managers have been working to simplify Washington’s regulations for freshwater species, including steelhead, trout, warm water fish, sturgeon and carp. To that end, managers are seeking public comment on a proposal for simplified recreational fishing regulations, said Jim Unsworth, director of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

As part of that effort, the department has scheduled six workshops to discuss the proposed fishing changes with the public. This is the first year of a three-year effort to simplify those regulations. Next year, fishery managers are scheduled to work on salmon fisheries in marine and freshwater, while fisheries for shellfish and other marine fish will be addressed in 2019. Changes this year would apply to freshwater throughout the state with some exceptions.

To review and comment on the proposed rules, visit the department’s website.

New wildlife sheriff in town

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) enforcement program has a new chief – Steve Bear, former head of Alaska’s Division of Wildlife Troopers.

Bear was selected by WDFW following a nationwide search for candidates. He has over 25 years of law enforcement experience. As chief, Bear will oversee 130 commissioned officers. He replaces Steve Crown, who left in 2016 to head the Wenatchee Police Department.
