UPDATE: Arrest made in killing of deputy

A suspect in the shooting death of a Pierce County Sheriff Department deputy is in custody, authorities announced Monday afternoon.
The 32-year-old man was arrested after a State Patrol trooper spotted him while working traffic control in the 20300 block of 42nd Avenue East, one of the streets in an area police had been searching since one of two male suspects fled the shooting scene.
According to the Sheriff Department, the trooper thought the man looked suspicious. He was detained by a Sheriff Department patrol sergeant, who learned there were three warrants for his arrest.
He was booked into the Pierce County Jail on those warrants. Detectives said there was probable cause to also jail him on suspicion of being involved in the deputy’s death and were working on an additional charge of murder in the first degree.
Deputy Daniel McCartney, 34, was shot after chasing two men who were involved in an apparent burglary of a home in the Frederickson area late Sunday night.
