A man accused in the shooting death in Frederickson of a Pierce County Sheriff Department deputy made his first court appearance Tuesday, the same day a third person was implicated in events leading up to the shooting..
Frank William Pawul, 32, was ordered by a Superior Court judge to be held without bail pending formal charges against him, which authorities indicated could be filed Thursday.
Authorities revealed Tuesday that Pawul is one of three people they believe are connected to the fatal shooting of deputy Daniel McCartney. Henry Michael Carden, 35, was found dead from a gunshot wound at the scene of a break-in at a residence Sunday night. And a third person tied to the case, a woman who may have been a driver for the two men, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of assisting a crime.
The same day as those developments, McCartney’s body was escorted by police from the county medical examiner’s office in Tacoma to Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood. Details of funeral services there haven’t been announced.
Pawul was arrested Monday a few blocks from where McCartney responded to a 9-1-1 call about a burglary or home invasion robbery at a residence in the 20300 block of 42nd Avenue East. As he chased two suspects on foot, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the deaths of the deputy and Carden, according to the Sheriff Department.
Department officials said they would release the latest details on the investigation of the incident during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
