Daisey Newman having fun, making record books at University of Washington for her javelin skills

One of Eatonville’s own is making her mark at the University of Washington’s campus in Seattle.

Daisey Newman, 2015 Eatonville High School grad, has thrown herself into the record books with a stellar sophomore season. At her first meet this season, Newman hurled a javelin 147’11”, good enough for Top 10 all time for women Husky athletes.

“My freshman year I didn’t come in prepared, I got beaten up pretty bad,” she said. “But I trained all summer long, practicing every day. I really worked hard.”

At the Ken Shannon Invitational in Seattle last weekend, Newman threw 141’9”, just two inches behind her teammate Emmy Engle.

“I’m still reaching for that 150’ mark,” she said. “It’s in reach for me.”

As a Cruiser, Newman made the state tournament all four years of high school, throwing shot put, discus and javelin. She made the tournament in all three events as a sophomore and senior. Her senior year, she took top five in state in all three events, finishing as runner-up in shot put and javelin and in fifth place in discus.

After she graduated from Eatonville High School, Newman went to the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California for a year. There, she threw all three previous implements, adding the hammer throw. She threw a then-best 144’1 before earning Junior College All American status.

Newman then transferred to the UW to be closer to home, although her family has been supportive no matter where she travels.

“I want to thank my parents,” she said. “They have been my number one supporters. It doesn’t matter where the meet is, they are going. It’s been amazing.”

Her parents, Stephanie and Dan Newman have supported Daisey and her four siblings, Bryndle, Brodey, Sidney and Lalley. Back in Washington, Newman has a job at the nearby mall while balancing her classes, practices and meets.

Newman is specializing in javelin at UW, but as an athletic sophomore (and an academic junior), she will have more time to reach that 150-foot mark… and beyond.
