A Pierce County Sheriff's Office Deputy was involved in a shooting in the Elk Plain area, leaving one man dead.
At 9:32 p.m., a woman called 911 to report that her male friend was having a mental breakdown in the middle of road. During the 911 call the dispatcher suddenly heard screaming and was unable to speak to the caller; when the caller got back on the phone, she told the dispatcher that her friend had a knife, then said “Let go of me now!” and stop it!”. The caller then got back on the phone and told the dispatcher that her friend was now on foot headed eastbound on 252nd St.
As Pierce County deputies headed to the scene, another call to 911 came in, reporting a man matching the suspect's description attempting to enter the caller's vehicle.
The first 911 caller was still on the phone with dispatchers and told them that her friend was trying to “jump into other people’s vehicles”.
As the first deputy arrived on scene, the caller told the dispatchers that the suspect was now trying to get into her vehicle.
Moments later the deputy radioed in that shots had been fired; the suspect had reportedly refused multiple commands from the deputy at gunpoint, then entered the deputy’s patrol vehicle at which point the deputy fired at the suspect.
The suspect is deceased at the scene and is believed to be a 28 year old male from Spanaway. The deputy was not injured and detectives are investigating the incident.
