Prepare for the flood; keep drains clear and research local risks

With the rainy season just starting, Pierce County is hoping to curb road floods by asking residents to keep drains clear of leaves and debris.

“Leaves can clog storm drains, resulting in roadway flooding,” a Pierce County press release stated. “Residents are encouraged to pick up yard waste and regularly check storm drains near their properties to make sure they aren’t blocked by leaves.”

Residents have a few options to take care of yard waste and natural debris. Residents can put leaves and other yard debris in yard waste bins for pick up, the press release stated. Go to www.piercecountywa.gov/yardwaste to locate transfer stations where yard waste can be dropped off.

If residents see a flooded street and a drain cannot be unclogged, residents are encouraged to call Pierce County Planning and Public Works at 253-798-6000. Residents can also submit a request for action at www.piercecountywa.gov/rfa.

Anyone who lives in unincorporated Pierce County who sees a flood near a river or stream is asked to call 253-798-6000. Residents in cities and towns are asked to call their local public works department.

Residents can prepare for flooding by learning more about flood risks near their properties, the press release stated. Pierce County provides a free property map, which explains an individual’s flood risk. Flood insurance is available for residents in unincorporated Pierce County, and residents can receive a 40 percent discount on their flood insurance policies, according to the press release. Homeowner’s insurance does not cover flooding.
