Local high school wrestlers made their hometown proud during a local classic match in Tacoma.

The WIAA Mat Classic XXXI went underway Friday, Feb. 15, at the Tacoma Dome where 10 of Eatonville High School’s wrestlers had qualified to compete in the event. They joined 2,943 other high school wrestlers from across Washington vying for the coveted state title. The Eatonville wrestlers were Austin Frink, Zack Smith, Kaden Olsen, Lucas Lane, Robert Donelan and Trevor Scantling for the boys. Girls included Allyson Estes, Taylor Curtis, Kayla Trujillo and Sadie Schier.

Frink, Smith and Donelan all won their first-round matches. Olsen, Lane, and Scantling all lost their opening round matches and dropped into the consolation round. During the girls' matches, Estes, Curtis and Schier all won their first-round matches and moved on to the second round.

The boys battled in the consolation round only to all be eliminated from competition by the end of the first day.

Curtis, Trujillo and Schier all battled their way to a win and qualified day two of competition. This was the first time in Eatonville school history where a girl made it to day two. All three of these girls ended up finishing in the top 12 in the state.

The entire Eatonville High School girls’ team was named the 2019 WIAA 2A Academic Champions. The team was presented their award on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the event.

“I am proud of our team," Assistant Coach Brad Pole said. "They came out and battled hard against the best of the best our state has to offer.  While we fell short of making the podium, we are young and hungry.  About 80 percent of our team is freshman and sophomores, which makes me very excited for our future.  Our preparation for Mat Classic XXXII begins today.”
