Next year’s funding via Pierce County Historical Preservation grant program was the main focus of the Oct. 22 meeting of the Pierce County Council.
No final decision was made on the proposal disbursing $143,012 for 15 grant applications recommended by the Pierce County Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission. The council voted 7-0 to take up the resolution for further consideration at its regular Nov. 5 meeting.
The program is funded by the county’s one dollar portion of the five dollars per instrument surcharge levied by the Auditor’s Office for each document recorded under provisions of the Revised Code of Washington 36.22.170(1)(a). The goal of the program is to distribute small, yet meaningful, grants to help promote historic preservation throughout the county.
In other business, the council unanimously passed a proposal setting the date of an evening council meeting in Council District 2 for 6 p.m., Oct. 29, at Step By Step, 3303 8th Ave. S.E., in Puyallup. District 2 includes the communities of Browns Point, Dash Point, Edgewood, Fife, Lakeland, Milton, Northeast Tacoma, Pacific, Puyallup, Sumner and the Port of Tacoma.
Step By Step is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping at-risk pregnant women.
As required by the county charter, the council holds at least one in-district meeting each year to be chaired by the council member representing that district – in the case of next week’s meeting, Councilmember Pam Roach will chair.
