A man who may have been too eager to impress a woman he met at a casino has been arrested in connection with the robbery last week of Monroe's Union Bank.
The Friday before last, at 5:25 p.m., a man with a graying beard and a ball cap walked into the Union Bank on the corner of Main Street and Blakeley and demanded cash.
He fled with his loot on foot, and police couldn't find him.
But the next day, police received a tip from a woman who said she had met a man she believed to be the robber at the Tulalip Casino that night and that she had ended up spending the night with him in the casino hotel.
According to the woman, he told her he'd robbed the bank, giving her specific details of how he did it, and ultimately showing her the note he'd passed to the teller that demanded cash.
Eventually he gave her some money for meth and her services, along with the note, she said.
During their time together, he also left their room for a few minutes and returned without his beard, she said.
She provided police with the man's cell phone number.
Video from the casino and the hotel showed the suspect entering the casino and the hotel dressed in the same clothes the bank robber had worn. The hotel room had been registered to a man with an Idaho driver's license, and the Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed his identity.
Friday, investigators called the man and asked him to come down to the Monroe Police Station. The man said he was staying at his mother's house in Monroe and agreed to come in.
The man, 53, was arrested without incident.
