Special to the Monitor
Don't miss the SEATTLE ROCK ORCHESTRA (SRO), with special guest Artis the Spoonman (from Soundgarden fame), performing live at Battle in the Barn IV on Saturday, October 25 at the new Evergreen Fairgrounds Event Center.
Seattle Rock Orchestra combines the best of rock-and-roll music with variations of classical music. What you get from this talented group of artists are high-energy performances that are flawless, rockin' and at times, absolutely beautiful to the ear with the classical infusions. Their aim is to provide affordable and unique concert experiences, spanning diverse genres and engaging a broad audience of music lovers.
SRO was born out of the desire to marry the unabashed performance energy of rock 'n' roll with the broader palette of musical nuances treasured in classical music. Founded by bassist/composer Scott Teske, SRO started modestly in 2008, performing their first show as a 13-piece string orchestra.
As word of the ensemble and its mission spread, the size of the group and the profile of the performances matured, leading within months to high-profile collaborations with Jeremy Enigk, Damien Jurado, Jesse Sykes and Rosie Thomas. 2009 brought the orchestra to center stage with its sold out re-imagining of Arcade Fire's Funeral, followed by a move to the Moore Theatre for their 2010-2011 season and tributes to David Bowie, The Beach Boys, Radiohead, Queen and performances at the Sasquatch Music Festival in both 2010 and 2011. SRO continued to develop its reputation for high-quality, high-energy shows over its 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons with tributes to Stevie Wonder, Muse, Led Zeppelin, the Smashing Pumpkins, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and the introduction of their annual 'New Works' and 'Chamber Rock' shows.
Also in 2012, SRO contributed strings to the song Neon Cathedral on Macklemore's 2012 album The Heist, and released its own debut EP in 2013 featuring songs by Radiohead, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder and Beck.
Now a 50+ piece orchestra with strings, woodwinds, brass, choir, backing band, and a rotating cast of guest vocalists, SRO is entering its fourth full season of quality programming.
Upcoming tribute performances for 2014-2015 will include The Police, Beck and Led Zeppelin. Other performances may be added later in the year, so be sure to check the Seattle Rock Orchestra website for any updates.
SRO's Mission: Seattle Rock Orchestra is dedicated to creating performances that are spectacular, fun, educational, and of exceptional quality. SRO celebrates and perpetuates the orchestral tradition while exploring the rich history of rock and pop music; presents new works by emerging artists; engages in collaborations across genres and artistic disciplines; and offers exciting educational programs for youth. Seattle Rock Orchestra is an associated program of Shunpike.
Our education programs give young musicians a chance to see opportunity within their traditional instrument beyond the usual confines of the classical music world. SRO is committed to providing scholarships to promising youth who may not be able to afford tuition costs.
